Intro: I’m always looking for supplements, or research chemicals that increase focus, motivation, and energy. Today we’re going to dive into Maca, and whether or not you should pick some up at your local grocery store, let’s get into it!
What is MACA?
Maca is an important root vegetable in the mustard family that originated in central Peru, growing in the mountains at high attitudes of up to 11,000 feet. Natives began using this root once they noticed the positive effects it had on their livestock, giving their animals a boost in energy and a higher fertility rate.
It’s commonly believed that the highest quality Maca still comes from central Peru due to this history and the location, so if you plan on buying some, be on the lookout for where it is being cultivated!
The chemical composition of Maca contains (great) amounts of:
- Amino acids
- Vitamin B1
- Vitamin B2
- Vitamin B12
- Vitamin C
- Vitamin E
What are the benfits of MACA?
Maca is widely known for being used in pre-work outs by athletes and bodybuilders. People who have taken Maca do report higher energy levels and endurance, though few studies actually support this.
Though many people say that it helps memory and learning, few studies have been conducted to support this. However, there was a study done in 2011 that found giving Maca to mice with impaired memory, actually caused the mice to show improvement. After reading that study, researchers suggest that Maca could be beneficial in treating those with Alzheimer’s.
Maca contains Flavonoids, which is believed to improve mood and reduce anxiety by supporting serotonin in the brain. A study done in 14 post-menopausal women showed exactly that.
There are many more benefits to Maca that I won’t go into detail but are supported by evidence, such as fighting free radicals, reducing sun damage, reducing blood pressure, increasing fertility, and reducing menopause symptoms.
Do I Take Maca?
Not regularly, no. I bought this a while back trying to replicate the effects of my previously prescribed Adderall, this was well before I even decided to start blogging. It does give you a noticeably warm feeling in the chest and a good bit of energy, and my libido was certainly increased while taking it too. Though it did not really help me reach my goal of intense focus and motivation.
Most noted effects:
- Increased Energy
- Slight Memory Boost
- Increased Libido
- Mild Stimulation
Most noted effects from myself, and others.*
If your looking for a decent boost of energy, need a good pre-workout ingredient for your smoothie, or maybe wanting to spice things up in the bedroom, then this is your go-to supplement. Other then that, it’s highly unlikely that you will get a noticeable increase in your focus or motivation!
